The Magic of Mindful Eating: Savor Every Bite

Mindful eating enables us to think more carefully about our eating choices and, consequently, feel more gratitude for the things we often take for granted. After all, food is a blessing and plays a major role in our overall wellness. Why not be grateful for it?

Studies show that mindful eating may even help people lose weight or manage chronic conditions, but the main point is to create a more thoughtful approach to eating food. 

The opposite of mindful eating is mindless eating. Here are examples of what it could look like:

  • Eating an entire bag of chips in front of the TV

  • Coping with stress by eating instead of exercise

  • Wolfing food down because you waited too long to eat

I’ve probably done all of these things at one time or another. The one I’m most guilty of is eating too fast - there have been times I looked forward to a yummy dessert, but ate it so quickly that I immediately forgot what it tasted like. 

Here’s a question for all of us: how might mindful eating foster more gratitude and deeper connections in our lives?

Here are some ways to incorporate mindful eating into your lifestyle:

  1. Pause and focus on gratitude. Don’t dig in right away. Many cultures take time to express thanks for their food, but you can take it a step farther by thinking about everything it took to get it on your plate.

  2. Use your senses. Focus on taking in the experience of eating with all your senses. What does it look like? What does it smell like? How does it taste? When you take your time, you’re likely to eat smaller portions, which can help you maintain a healthy digestion and weight.

  3. Take smaller bites and chew thoroughly. Chewing is a significant part of the digestive process. If you regularly struggle with digestive discomfort, chewing your food longer can be a simple way to boost your digestion.

  4. Remember that food is fuel. When you swallow the food, don’t get swept away by the experience. Make sure to also consider the vitamins and nutrition your body will be absorbing.
